A game of poker involves players placing bets on the outcome of their hands. The player who holds the best hand wins the pot. There are many different types of poker and the rules vary widely, but in general, the game is based on skill, not luck.<\/p>\n
Each poker variant has its own set of rules, but in all forms a player must make a contribution to the pot, called an ante, before any other bets can be placed. In some versions a player may also be allowed to check, which means that he will not place a further bet but will remain in the pot until someone raises the betting amount.<\/p>\n
A poker hand consists of five cards. A high card, a pair of cards, two pairs of the same suit, three of a kind, and a straight are common winning combinations. A straight is a series of five cards of the same suit, regardless of rank.<\/p>\n

The dealer of a poker game deals the cards, one at a time faceup to each player. The dealer is designated by a button that rotates clockwise among the players.<\/p>\n
In each dealing round, the dealer distributes one card faceup to each player and then interrupts for a betting interval. In each betting interval the first bettor is the player who has the highest-ranking poker combination in his faceup cards. If two or more players have the same combination, the \u201cfirst\u201d one (nearest the dealer\u2019s left) bets first; any other bettor may check.<\/p>\n
Before a deal begins, each player is required to ante, which is a minimum amount of money that can be wagered. The ante is usually equal to the minimum amount of chips that will be used during the deal, but it can be more or less depending on the specific variant being played.<\/p>\n
A player who bets all of his chips into the pot, or who is all-in, is a high roller and has the largest stake in the game. In other games a player who bets all of his chips is called an underdog, although in some variants the term is not used.<\/p>\n
The first bettor in a betting interval is the player who has the best poker combination in his faceup cards; in other betting intervals, players with higher combinations are ranked in reverse order and the player who bets lowest is the first bettor.<\/p>\n
Poker is an extremely popular game, especially in North America, where it originated. It is widely played in private homes, in casinos and at poker clubs around the world.<\/p>\n
